Vernon Adams Jr. and Jake Wieneke named among CFL players of the week

Following the Montreal Alouettes spectacular historic comeback on Saturday, two of the players responsible for that feat were honoured on Tuesday, as quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. and receiver Jake Wieneke were named among the CFL players of the week. The Alouettes were trailing by 24 points towards the end of the second quarter before the team initiated its biggest comeback in concession history.

Adams Jr. completed 27 of his 43 passes for gains of 488 yards, while throwing four touchdown passes in the 38-37 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium. The former University of Oregon Duck also carried the ball on six occasions for gains of 38 yards, while adding a rushing major, his 11th of the season, helping him improve his team record for rushing touchdowns in a season by a quarterback. The 26-year-old  completed passes to seven different players. Jake Wieneke was his favourite target and he was also named among the players of the week.

The 25-year-old rookie caught eight passes for gains of 134 yards. He was on the receiving end of the game winning touchdown with six seconds left on the clock. Just like the rest of his teammates, the former South Dakota University Jackrabbit never gave up and even made a spectacular catch when he prevented the ball from hitting the ground after it deflected off an opposing player on the game’s final drive.

The players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
