Alouettes draft Jonathan Sutherland and Lwal Uguak in the first round

Montreal, May 2, 2023 – The Montreal Alouettes selected linebacker Jonathan Sutherland in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2023 CFL Draft.

Sutherland (5’11”, 214 lbs.) registered 137 tackles in 58 games during his five seasons with the Penn State University Nittany Lions. The Ottawa, ON native also made eight tackles for losses, while batting down six passes, on top of forcing and recovering a fumble.

Last season, Sutherland received All Big-10 Academic Honors, as he completed the season with 35 tackles, 1.5 tackles for losses and one sack in 12 games at the linebacker position, including eight as a starter.

Following the conclusion of the NFL Draft, Sutherland signed a deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

With their second pick of the first round (seventh overall) Montreal drafted defensive lineman Lwal Uguak.

Uguak (6’5″, 271 lbs.) completed his collegiate career with the TCU Horned Frogs in 2022, amassing nine tackles and recovering a fumble. He helped his team complete the season with a 13-2 record and reach the NCAA National Championship Game.

The 23-year-old Edmonton, AB native, who had played his first three seasons with the University of Connecticut Huskies, completed his collegiate career with 56 tackles, 9.5 tackles for losses, four sacks, and four defended passes in 48 games.

In the second round, with the 13th pick overall, Montreal claimed fullback David Dallaire from the Université Laval Rouge et Or.

Dallaire (6’3″, 217 lbs.) helped his team hoist the Vanier Cup last fall, making four catches for 23 yards as well as a fourth quarter touchdown in a 30-24 win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

The 23-year-old Saint-Georges, QC native was voted a RSEQ all-star in 2022 after scoring seven touchdowns, including five rushing, during the regular season, which was good for second place in the conference. He caught 18 passes for 279 yards, while adding 86 rushing yards on 22 carries.
