Free online resources for parents

By Léa, @alsc_lea

Due to the social isolation measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19, in addition to being a full-time parent, many must also assume the role of a part-time teacher. For most, it’s a new challenge and a significant one, to say the least. Thankfully, there are plenty of resources available online with a variety of educational activities to keep your little ones stimulated. We chose four websites that we thought were very user-friendly and that are filled with fun and interactive academic content to keep your younger (and older) students learning while having a good time.

Open school

This is the official website suggested by our government. It’s my favourite by far. “Open School” is very clear and has resources for learning, creating, having fun and staying active for all grade levels, from preschool to high school. It even offers content designed to provide support for adult general education (FGA) and for vocational training (FP). A wide array of entertaining and academic games and exercises adapted to your child’s grade level are accessible and made available by our government … what else can you ask for!

Snow class

This website is super user-friendly and gives access to a ton of educational games for students from the first to the sixth grade of elementary school. What’s even more interesting about this resource is that is also available on tablet and mobile phone via the free Puffin Academy application.

Tidou

This website offers a mix of online activities and printable educational worksheets. It’s organized by grade level and subject, which makes it very easy to navigate. Since this free resource comes from our French neighbours and based on the French academic system, you’ll have to take a few minutes to look at the activities offered and figure out which ones suit your child’s grade level. Remember, school starts at the age of 3 in France, so there may be a few differences in the difficulty of activities. It’s all about adapting to what suits your little one!

Logiciel educatif

Another great site provided by our friends from France. Once again, you have to make sure to adapt the material to your kiddo’s academic level. Once you’ve figured out the right level of difficulty for your child, you’ll find a plethora of fun activities. Plus, the platform is super user-friendly website: simply select the level you want, and the page will subdivide into the different subjects! It can keep the little ones entertained for a while!

As my teammate explained in her article earlier this month, reading is very important for children since it develops their imagination and improves their vocabulary. Since most stores are closed, making it harder to get your hands on actual books, Amazon has decided to make many of their Audiobooks available to download for free!

Hoping that all this material will make life a bit easier for you in the coming weeks!
