The 2019 season review: June 14 in Edmonton, the preamble of a great adventure

Since the current circumstances are forcing us to slow down, we thought we’d take this as an opportunity to take a stroll down memory lane and look back at all the greatest moments from the exhilarating 2019 season. First stop, the very first regular-season game in Edmonton.

Friday June 14 2019,
Finale score : 32-25

Friday, June 14, 2019 marks the beginning of the 2019 CFL regular season, and our Alouettes have the honour to be the first in action, as get ready to go head to head with the Eskimos. It’s a tall order for our Western opponents and their brand new offensive duo, quarterback Trevor Harris and receiver Greg Ellingson…

Our Alouettes too are in less than ideal conditions to kick off their season. A few days prior, Head coach Mike Sherman was fired. Then, it was General Manager Kavis Reed who got dismissed. Offensive coordinator Khari Jones unexpectedly thrust into the top job and had to take the reins of the team just a few days before the big game.

The clock starts. Our Alouettes start strong with a touchdown by DeVier Posey on a pass from starting QB Antonio Pipkin. The Eskimos then take the lead for the next two quarters. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, we’re lagging behind by 18 points.

Our team shows grit and relentlessness (the same grit and relentlessness that we’ll be seeing game after game all season) and begins a spectacular comeback in the fourth quarter with another QB in command. A certain Vernon Adams Jr. is at the helm, taking over for the injured Antonio Pipkin.

With just over two minutes left in the game, our Als suddenly tie at 25. It doesn’t take long before the Eskimos come marching right back and regain the lead with a touchdown by Trevor Harris. This touchdown seals the outcome to 32-25. And just like that, the first game of the season is over.

Afterwards, Khari Jones concludes: “It’s the first week. We expect there to be things to work on. I asked the guys to fight and I liked their fight.”

It’s the beginning of a great adventure…and the start of our Cardiac Kids’ addiction to heart attack inducing second halves.
