Nik Lewis named among players of the week

Montreal Alouettes slotback Nik Lewis was named one of the Canadian Football League Top Performers of the week.

The former Southern Arkansas University receiver caught ten passes for 88 total yards last Thursday night against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium. With the performance, Lewis surpassed the record held by former B.C. Lions receiver Geroy Simon of 1,029 career receptions.

Now in his 14th season in the CFL, Lewis caught his 1,030th career pass last Thursday to set the all-time record. Lewis has 53 receptions this season, good for sixth in the league. The historic catch was made during the Alouettes late fourth quarter comeback, when he caught a pass from quarterback Darian Durant for a six-yard gain. He was an important part of a ten point comeback which forced overtime.

Lewis has made 53 catches in nine games this season, which puts him sixth in the CFL. He cumulated 491 receiving yards, maintaining a 9.1 yards per catch average. On top of having sure hands, Lewis continues to stretch plays and drives, while jumping over opposing players out to tackle him.

The 35-year-old is currently in his third campaign with the Alouettes, and ranks sixth in CFL history with 13,620 receiving yards. Lewis also has ten seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards. Only Terry Vaughn (11) and Milt Stegall (10) can match Lewis’s consistency.

The CFL Top Performers of the Week are selected by league alumni and current broadcasters Duane Ford (TSN), Matt Dunigan (TSN) and Pierre Vercheval (RDS). Fans can vote via the CFL’s Twitter account (@CFL) to determine which player is the Fan’s Choice of the week.

The Alouettes will host the Ottawa REDBLACKS at 7:30 p.m. ET on Thusday, August 31 at Percival-Molson Memorial Stadium. The game will be broadcast on TSN TV and TSN Radio 690. Fans can obtain tickets on this link
