Football headlines weekend in Montreal

MontrealAlouettes.com

Montreal – Montreal sports fans who have been starving for football over the past six months need not look further than the action-packed weekend ahead.

Starting today and continuing through Sunday, the Alouettes will be kicking off the 2011 football season in Montreal with exciting events including the Alouettes Classic and the first set of Junior Camps presented by Subway® Restaurants, while also bringing their three-day Mini Camp in Orlando to a close.

Here is a preview of what to expect from the Alouettes this weekend.

Friday: The 27th annual Alouettes Classic

The Alouettes Classic kicks off tonight at 7:00 p.m.

An annual event, this year’s Alouettes Classic promises to be just that, a classic. Not only will the game feature the best high-school players that Montreal has to offer, but it will also pit two of the Alouettes’ brightest stars against one another.

Team captains Scott Flory and Anwar Stewart have been exchanging words all week, firing up their respective teams in the process.

“Bottom line, Team Stewart is going to lose the game!  My team will be ready and excited to play, and his defence will be no test for my team’s offence.  Like Babe Ruth famously calling his home run, I’m calling a Team Flory win!” said Scott Flory at team practice earlier this week.

“They say offence sells tickets and defence wins championships. Is that true? Come out to Percival-Molson Stadium on April the 29th at 7:00 p.m. to find out as Team Stewart beats down Team Flory in a coaching battle. Don’t forget your A-game Scott, you know I won’t,” responded Stewart.

A Quebec tradition since 1985, the Ligue scolaire métropolitaine, a Montreal-area high school football league, gathers its best players each spring for the annual Alouettes Classic. This year, former Alouette assistant coach and current University of Montreal Carabins’ head coach Danny Maciocia and former Alouette kicker and current Concordia University Stingers’ head coach Gerry McGrath will lead both teams. Sonny Wolfe, head coach of the McGill Redmen, will also be on board to get the players ready for what should be a great football game.

Saturday & Sunday: 2011 Junior Camps presented by SUBWAY® Restaurants

Jr. Camps start Saturday.

For the 15th-straight year, the Alouettes are proud to provide Quebec’s youth with an opportunity to train with their heroes.

Saturday and Sunday, participants will be guided through the weekend by Alouettes players such as: Eric Deslauriers, Martin Bédard, Danny Desriveaux, Josh Bourke, Kristian Matte, John Bowman, Steven Holness and Étienne Boulay.

The Alouettes Alumni Association will also be well represented, with Sylvain Girard, Patrick Dorvelus, André Bolduc and the recently retired Matthieu Proulx all making appearances.

The football training sessions are targeted towards kids and are personalized to the physical and learning abilities of each child in accordance to their age groups. Acting as coaches, the Alouettes players will communicate their passion and knowledge of the game and reveal the secret tips that make them pros.

Finally, the Alouettes’ official Mini-Camp, which began Tuesday, also comes to a close today, marking the final time that the players will be together before training camp begins on June 5.
