Five Stats That Explain the Alouettes’ Success
Four games into the season, several statistics highlight just how well the Montreal Alouettes have been playing. Let’s take a closer look at some of the numbers that stand out.
The Alouettes sit atop the East Division with a 3-1 record. Jason Maas’ squad is the only team that remains unbeaten against East Division opponents (3-0), an encouraging sign heading into the rest of the season.
- Quarterback Davis Alexander is on fire
Quarterback Davis Alexander ranks second in the CFL with 1,478 passing yards. League leader Chad Kelly has just six more yards (1,484), but he has thrown eight interceptions. Alexander, meanwhile, has yet to throw an interception. That’s certainly worth highlighting.
- A blazing start for Tyson Philpot and Tyler Snead
Receiver Tyson Philpot is enjoying the best start of his career. The 25-year-old has caught 36 passes (first in the CFL) for 537 yards (also first in the league) and three touchdowns.
Philpot has 149 yards more than the next highest total. He also leads the league with five receptions of 30 yards or more. He’s been flat-out dominant.
At his current pace, Philpot would finish the season with 2,641 receiving yards, which would easily shatter the CFL’s single-season record. Allen Pitts set the current mark with 2,036 receiving yards for the Calgary Stampeders in 1994.
Tyler Snead, meanwhile, ranks fourth in the CFL with 25 receptions for 384 yards. Even more impressive, the 5-foot-7, 187-pound receiver has already recorded four receptions of 30 yards or more, many of them coming through heavy traffic.
- Geoffrey Cantin-Arku is settling in nicely
In his first season as a full-time starter, linebacker Geoffrey Cantin-Arku already ranks among the CFL leaders with 27 total plays. He has registered 22 defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, two pass knockdowns and two tackles for loss.
- Hats off to the offensive line
The Alouettes have allowed just three sacks through four games, the fewest in the CFL. Only the Edmonton Elks have matched that total. They’ve accomplished that feat despite being without starting centre Justin Lawrence. Credit goes to his replacement, Cyrille Hogan-Saindon, and the entire offensive line for consistently getting the job done.
- Jose Maltos-Diaz keeps rolling
Alouettes kicker Jose Maltos-Diaz ranks second in the CFL after converting 12 of his 13 field-goal attempts. His 92.3 percent success rate speaks for itself.
