Preview : Alouettes travel to B.C. on Saturday night

The Alouettes will look to snap their two-game losing skid as they travel to Vancouver to take on the B.C. Lions on Saturday night. The Alouettes will use their third different starting quarterback, as McLeod Bethel-Thompson was placed on the six-game injured list because of a right elbow injury.

Here’s what you need to know about the game:

Caleb Evans starts

Evans played the second half against Edmonton last week and looked pretty good. He finished the year 14-of-18 for 113 yards and one touchdown pass. The 27-year-old will make his first start of 2025, and he’ll get the nod against the Lions for the first time in his career.

The 27-year-old won two important games in the middle of the 2023 season when he defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Ottawa Redblacks in back-to-back contests. In the game against the Redblacks, Evans scored the game-winning rushing touchdown with only seconds remaining, so he’s fully capable of delivering under pressure.

What makes this story even better is that Evans is coming off a torn ACL which he suffered in Hamilton one year ago. The rehab process was long and challenging, but he managed to return before the end of the preseason.

“I’m just grateful and thankful to be back out here,” Evans said. “It changes your perspective having an injury like that because it’s a season-ending injury. To be back here, with the work I put in here and in Dallas, it’s hard work to get back here.”

Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund is the sack leader

After his three-sack performance in last week’s game against the Elks, Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund will go into this week as the sack leader in the CFL.

The 29-year-old has already matched his sack total from all of last season (7) when he was named the Most Outstanding Canadian in the East Division. He’s also just one sack away from tying his career-high of eight, which was set in 2022 with Calgary.

As a team, the Alouettes lead the league in quarterback sacks, with 23, while the Lions have allowed the fewest number of sacks, with nine.

Tough to win in Vancouver

It’s no secret that the Alouettes have struggled in Vancouver in their history. The Als haven’t won a game at B.C. Place since 2015, and they have a record of 9-32-1 all-time out in Vancouver.

“I’ll give them credit,” Maas said of the Lions. “They’ve been a good football team for a number of years. I think that’s part of it. That’s about it. Is it tough to travel across the country? Sure. But that’s a challenge, that’s not really a reason to not win games. In the last two years, we just haven’t made enough plays out there to win.”
