Update on Davis Alexander’s Status
Montreal Alouettes quarterback Davis Alexander did not participate in Monday’s team practice at Stade Hébert in Saint-Léonard.
The 26-year-old exited last Thursday’s win in Edmonton during the third quarter after flipping a pass to fullback Jacob Mason near the right sideline. Alexander hobbled off the field but remained on the sideline to cheer on his teammates.
Following Monday’s on-field session, head coach Jason Maas did not rule out the possibility of Alexander suiting up in Friday night’s road game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
“He’s getting treatment,” Maas said of Alexander. “We did quite a few things inside the facility today to stay out of the heat. He did a lot of mental work with us there, and he’s continuing his treatment. We’ll assess him later in the week to determine his availability for Friday night.”
Alexander is off to a strong start this season, having passed for 803 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions in two and a half games. He also has six carries for an impressive 64 yards.
Veteran backup quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson took most of the first-team reps at practice on Monday afternoon. The 36-year-old completed six of eight passes for 77 yards in Thursday’s game against the Elks.
“It was good,” Bethel-Thompson said of his performance. “I wish the execution had been a little better down the stretch. We had two or three three-and-outs to end the game, which wasn’t how we wanted to finish. It felt like we lost momentum. Still, it felt great to be out there and back in the mix.”
Bethel-Thompson, who helped lead the Toronto Argonauts to a Grey Cup in 2022, was acquired from the Elks in a trade for Cody Fajardo last offseason. He signed a one-year deal with the club last winter.
“I prepare like I’m starting every week,” said Bethel-Thompson. “Davis is young and spry, so I’m assuming he’ll bounce back quickly. Young people tend to do that — they’re like superheroes. But I have to be ready to start each week. That’s my job as a backup. It was great to get some reps tonight. I’m prepared to do my job.”
Last season with Edmonton, he threw for 3,748 yards and 24 touchdowns in 16 games. His 24 touchdown passes ranked second in the CFL, behind only Tiger-Cats starter Bo Levi Mitchell (32).
The Alouettes will return to the practice field Tuesday morning.
