Montreal Alouettes mourn the passing of Charlie Baillie
The Montreal Alouettes are saddened to learn of the passing of Charlie Baillie. He was inducted into the builder’s category of the University’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. He died on Feb. 17 in Montreal. He was 90 years old.
Baillie played for the Montreal Alouettes in 1954 and from 1956 to 1965. He also spent the 1955 season with the Calgary Stampeders.
He went on to have a lengthy coaching career at McGill, including three seasons as an assistant coach (1967-1969). He then spent two seasons on staff at Sir George Williams University before returning to McGill in 1972, where he served as head coach for 29 years until his retirement after the 2000 season.
He was the only coach to be part part of all three McGill teams that advanced to the Vanier Cup Game. McGill won the Vanier Cup in 1987.
Baillie was voted Coach of the Year four times (1981, 1983, 1993 and 1994), named the 1987-88 Quebec Foundation University Coach of the Year and was the recipient of a Quebec Amateur Football Federation achievement award in the fall of 1988.
