The Montreal Alouettes are saddened to learn about the passing of one of its former players, Dan Yochum, who died Wednesday of a heart ailment in his residence in Hellertown, Pennsylvania. He was 70 years old.
Yochum had a brilliant career in the CFL, playing nine seasons as an offensive tackle with the Alouettes between 1972 and 1980, helping the team win the Grey Cup in 1980, as well as during the infamous 1977 Ice Bowl.
A true pillar on Montreal’s offensive line, he was named an East Division All-Star seven times between 1973 and 1979, as well as a CFL All-Star four times between 1975 and 1978. He was voted the CFL’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman in 1976.
He then helped the Edmonton Eskimos hoist the Grey Cup in 1980. He was inducted in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2004. A few days ago, he was elected to the Alouettes All-Time Team by TSN.
“The Alouettes would like to offer their most sincere condolences to the family and his close ones. Dan was an important cog in our powerful team during the 1970s, and all of the Alouettes family is mourning him today,” said Alouettes President Mario Cecchini.
