The 2019 season review: September 21, the comeback of the century!

We continue our 2019 season review with this incredible game against the Blue Bombers!

Saturday September 21 2019,
Final score : 38-37

It’s a third consecutive game against an opponent from the West on Saturday, September 21, as we welcome the Blue Bombers, who are fighting for first place in their division. Our Alouettes, on the other hand, need to bounce back from a very frustrating loss again the Riders the week before.

The beginning of the battle is disenchanting for our Alouettes… Our defence can’t seem to control the Bombers’ dominant offence who successfully run plays, over and over and over again. Before we know it, it’s 21-3 Winnipeg…

Adams Jr. And his crew retaliate with a rushing touchdown, cutting Winnipeg’s lead down to 11 points. Just when we think our Alouettes have finally found their groove, the Bombers strike right back with another touchdown.

And if that wasn’t enough, on the following drive, Adams Jr. fumbles after a sack… and our opponents land a touchdown. With less than one minute before halftime, it’s 37-10 Bombers. Fans all around the stadium are in disbelief.

We’ve said it and seen it in many instances this season; This group never gives up. A few seconds before the clock hits zero, defensive back Ciante Evans makes the pick of the game, setting up a touchdown pass from Adams to Chris Matthews. At the break, it’s 34-17 Winnipeg. We’re considerably trailing behind, but it seems like our defence has gotten its spark back.

That’s exactly what happens in the second half as our defence comes back on the turf with a brand new energy. Aside from a field goal at the beginning of the first half, our men won’t allow our opponent to score any more points. Our offence, on the other, is struggling to find momentum and is not performing as it should; We’re still 21 points behind at the start of the fourth quarter.

That’s when the unimaginable happens. The 19,000 fans in the stadium (well, maybe slightly less since some had already left thinking it was over for our Alouettes) have no idea that they’re about to witness a pivotal moment in Alouettes history. Montreal begins to move the ball again and Adams Jr. sets up a 10-yard touchdown pass to Matthews, reducing the game to 13 points. A missed a field goal attempt by Medlock send the crowd cheering, but in the following play, a timely interception on a pass by VA puts an end to a promising offensive drive. Winnipeg think they have it in the bag and our heroic defence quickly dampers their enthusiasm.

Our Alouettes capitalize on offence as Adams finds Posey in the end zone, resulting in a 29-yard pass touchdown. Once again, we must stop our opponent’s relentless offence, and it’s in a joint effort that Muamba and Bowman manage to sack Streveler to the ground. Winnipeg must punt and it’s Montreal’s last chance on offence.

One final memorable offensive drive leads to a historic comeback (reeling off 21 points in the fourth quarter) and our Alouettes get the big W in the midst of an indescribable frenzy!
