The 2019 season review: August 2, a small bump in the road

We continue our 2019 season review with a difficult game against Ottawa.

Friday August 2 2019,
Final score : 27-30

After a well-deserved break (our second of the season), our Alouettes have another meeting with the REDBLACKS, on home turf this time. The last battle between the two rival teams resulted in at 36-29 win for us and our men are ready to repeat the feat.

A lot is riding on this game since winning this battle would mean getting a fourth consecutive victory and taking the lead in our division.

We start off strong with our relentless defence provoking two turnovers, one of which translating into a Boris Bede field goal. VA keeps the momentum going with a touchdown, followed by a successful 1-point conversion. 10-0 Montreal. So far, our offensive and defensive units are having a remarkable game, but our special teams seem to be struggling. The REDBLACKS respond quickly with a 111-yard kickoff return touchdown. Our Als don’t think much of it as VA crosses the goals line to land his second TD of the evening. Ottawa retaliates once more with a 95-yard punt return touchdown by Dedmon, which further reduces the gap between the two rivals. 17-14 Montreal.

The second half start with an interception on a pass from VA intended for Geno Lewis, after which Ottawa lands their third touchdown. The REDBLACKS now have their lead of the night. 21-17. We catch up to tie the score…and that’s when disaster strikes. Vernon is taken to the ground and disgracefully hit to the back of the head by linebacker J.R. Tavai. Our starting QB steps off the field and it’s now Antonio Pipkin who is under centre. A few field goals by both teams send the game into overtime, and Ottawa finally get the win after a fumble by Stanback.

Our men began the battle towering over their opponents, but it’s really a series of errors and mishaps that led to an unfortunate loss. Tough pill to swallow for our Alouettes. The thing to take away here is that you learn from your mistakes… and that’s what we did.

Our men will have the opportunity to bounce back quickly since the Roughriders are coming to town the week after. Stay tuned to relive this historic game!
