Training camp report – Day 8

The Montreal Alouettes will have a new face on defence in 2019 with the arrival of defensive coordinator Bob Slowik, and the team’s veterans are excited by what they see so far and they are looking forward to measuring up to another team during a game.

“Coach Slowik is very smart and he knows what he’s doing out there. It’s a fun defence and it allows our players to play fast,” said veteran defensive end Gabriel Knapton. “You can tell that he has a lot of experience and his system puts me in a position to be better prepared.”

“We kept some things from last year’s system and added some new plays. Coach Slowik has done a real good job of balancing the old system, while mixing in the new system,” added linebacker Hénoc Muamba.

On top of liking what they see on the field, the Alouettes defensive veterans love the chemistry that is is starting to develop amongst the players. “The one thing I noticed since the beginning of camp is that we have a tight knit group. They are tight on and off the field,” said Knapton.

The Alouettes defence will get an opportunity to go up against a first rival on Thursday, as the team will visit the Toronto Argonauts at Varisty Stadium at 11:00 a.m.

Rapid Fire

Running back Josh Cleveland made his best Speedy Gonzales impression during morning practice. He took the hand off and ran like a rocket as he collected close to thirty yards, as no one was able to catch up… Quarterback Antonio Pipkin and receiver B.J. Cunningham seem ready for the season according to the morning session. Pipkin threw a long pass of more than 30 yards to Cunningham who snagged it in the end zone… Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. is not afraid to use his feet to dodge opponents. We saw him escape a blitz by running as he collected close to thirty yards… Running backs William Stanback and Jeremiah Johnson are always helping each other. They eat together and spend a lot of time talking strategy on the field during practices. A great team spirit prevails between running backs.

He said it

“The guys have been putting up a lot of good practices together. They work very hard day in and day out. Since it’s my second year in charge of the offence, the veterans know what to expect and that makes my job a bit easier. It’s nice to see the chemistry between Jeremiah John and William Stanback. Those guys are together all the time.”
