Training camp report – Day 5

New city, new team, new teammates and new caliber. It’s not always easy for a rookie in his first professional camp. It’s fair to say that Cody Cranston, who was drafted in the eighth round by the Alouettes earlier this month, didn’t necessarily have to start form scratch.

That’s because Cody is somewhat following in the footsteps of his brother Ty, who was drafted by the Alouettes in 2018 before taking part in camp and spending the season in Montreal. The two former University of Ottawa Gee Gees have a rare opportunity that brothers have of going through a professional football training camp side by side.

“It’s really special. On top of being my big brother, Ty is my best friend. We lived together for three years in Ottawa,” said Cody. “On top of that, Ty has helped me feel at ease here and I am more familiar with what is going on. He told me about his experience last year and I can relate to what I am going through.”

Big brother’s help can be felt on the field, as Cody has made a few interceptions since the start of camp.

“My brother is here because he deserves it. In fact, he’s better than me,” said Ty while laughing. “He’s my favourite player to watch out there. We are three years apart, so we didn’t always have the chance to play on the same teams and to be able to do it at the professional level is real special. I am really proud of my brother.”

Rapid Fire

Defensive backs Marcellus Pippins and Ryan Carter showed their talent for the defensive unit with one pick each. Pippins caught the ball while running as he amassed close to 20 yards on the play. On the other hand, Carter jumped in the air to beat the receiver on the play and kept the football in his hands… Many quarterback-receivers combos caught the attention of onlookers on Friday. The nicest belongs without a doubt to B.J. Cunningham who caught a nice pass from Jeff Mathews as he was in double coverage… Receiver Zac Parker continues his nice work as he also caught a Jeff Mathews bullet in spectacular fashion… Matt Shiltz completed a nice pass to rookie receiver Quan Bray, while DeVier Posey made two catches of about 40 yards on two Vernon Adams Jr. darts.

He said it

“We had a good day but we have to be consistent. Tomorrow will be another day and we will have to start all over again. We put this practice behind us, we have to study our play book and watch film. It’s hard work that will allow us to be successful. It’s not necessarily the talent that counts but rather the way you work. This group has a good work ethic and in addition the guys have a lot of potential. I’m happy with our team so far.”
