Alouettes add two quarterbacks to the roster

The Montreal Alouettes announced on Tuesday that the club has signed quarterbacks Garrett Fugate and Nick Shafnisky, as well as defensive lineman Vantrel McMillan, receiver Lonnie Outlaw and linebacker Jordan Harris.

Fugate (6’3″, 210 lbs.) played four seasons for the Central Missouri University Mules, and was the team’s starter during his final two campaigns. In 12 games during his senior season, the 23-year-old completed 271 of his 425 passes for 2,214 yards, including 31 touchdown passes against only nine interceptions. He averaged 304.6 passing yards per game. He also carried the ball 145 times, gaining 457 yards while scoring eight rushing touchdowns. He was worked out by the Green Bay Packers this past December.

During his time at Central Missouri, the Overland Park, KS native completed 433 of his 698 passes, gaining 5,915 yards while throwing 46 touchdown passes. He also kept the ball 301 times rushing for 1,206 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was also the Mules’ punter during his sophomore season, cumulating 1,223 yards on 30 kicks.

Shafnisky (6’2″, 220 lbs.) left the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks football program as the fourth all-time passer with 7,467 passing yards, after completing 595 of his 939 passes in 43 games. 54 of those passes were for touchdowns. The Whitehall, PA native also rushed for 1,611 yards on 456 carries.

The 22-year-old had an outstanding senior season during which he was named the Patriot League’ Offensive Player of the Year. In only nine starts that he season Shafnisky completed 187 of his 288 passes for 2,489 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also added 302 rushing yards on 100 carries, scoring 11 rushing touchdowns. Following that season, he took part in the Philadelphia Eagles rookie camp last April.

McMillan (6’2″, 240 lbs.) returns to the Alouettes after spending part of the 2017 season on Montreal’s practice roster. The Albany, GA native previously played three seasons for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs in the NCAA. The 24-year-old collected 115 tackles, 11 sacks and one interception in 34 games. The defensive end was named to the All Southern Conference Team by the media and was elected on the second team by conference’s coaches.

Outlaw (6’7″, 225 lbs.) played three seasons in the Arena Football League with the Philadelphia Soul and the Cleveland Gladiators, where he caught 24 passes for 317 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. The 25-year-old tall receiver played for the Miles College Golden Bears in the SIAC, where he scored four touchdowns in six games. The Milledgeville, GA athlete was invited to the Atlanta Falcons‘ rookie mini-camp in May 2014 and spent time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2016.

Harris (5’11”, 230 lbs.) played for the Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs in 2016, where he was named to the second All-Conference USA team. The Clarksdale, MS native led the Bulldogs with 94 tackles, including 2.5 for losses. In 2015, before his transfer, the 24-year-old linebacker played for the Iowa State University Cyclones in the NCAA. He amassed 70 tackles, adding five for losses in 12 games.
