History of a name

As is the tradition on Remembrance Day, we commemorate the Armistice of November 11, 1918 and pay homage to all those who fought to protect our rights and freedoms. Here at the Alouettes, we have a very special thought for the 425th Squadron, which was formed in 1942 and whose nickname is in honour of a certain native Gallic bird of prey renowned for its tenacity…

The 425th Squadron – the Royal Canadian Air Force’s first French Canadian squadron – was known for its tenacity and its dedication. Its members received more than 190 medals during the Second World War for having vigorously defended their homeland. And as no doubt you have guessed, it’s after the 425th that the team is named!

That is why, to this day, the Alouettes acknowledge their history by having flyovers before certain home games and by honoring Canadian Armed Forces personnel on the field.

You will also periodically see the players wearing a superb grey uniform with embroidered white wings. On this Remembrance Day, we turn our thoughts to the veterans. And we think of our origins and our values, upon which the Alouettes organization is based.
