Nik Lewis makes history

Montreal Alouettes‘ slot-back Nik Lewis made his 1,030th career reception Thursday night to move into first place all-time on the CFL reception list. The historic catch was made late in the fourth quarter when he hauled in a Darian Durant pass for a gain of six yards. Lewis finished the game with 10 catches, gaining  88 yards against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.

Lewis surpasses the mark set by longtime B.C. Lions receiver Geroy Simon, who was in first place all-time with 1029 career receptions. Lewis is in his third season with the Alouettes, and also sits sixth in CFL history with 13,620 receiving yards.

Now in his 14th season in the Canadian Football League, Lewis had over 1,000 receiving yards in a season on ten occasions. Only Terry Vaughn (11) and Milt Stegall (10) can match Lewis’ remarkable consistency.

“It’s a great honour to accomplish goals and to reach the standards of the greatest football players to touch a field,” said Nik Lewis after the game. “It wouldn’t be possible without the support of my family and friends. My teammates have always been great, they have pushed me to be better than I ever thought was possible. It’s been a group effort. Thank you to the Nik Lewis Nation. I’ve had wonderful coaches that have moulded me into more than a player, but a man.”

The Montreal Alouettes will face the Ottawa REDBLACKS at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium  on Thursday Aug. 31. The game will be presented on TSN, as well as on TSN 690. Fans can buy tickets for this game at MontrealAlouettes.com.
