Across the line of scrimmage

TYRELL SUTTON VS JEROME MESSAM

The word brotherhood is an important one in the football world. Although they play hard, the CFL players are respectful of one another. Enemies on the field, friends off the field. Across the line of scrimmage introduces you to two players who, besides roughing each other up during games, have many things in common.

This week, our natural-born leader Tyrell Sutton will be running against his ex-teammate and well-known Jerome Messam. Here’s what they had to say about each other.

TYRELL ON JEROME

Back in 2013, Jerome Messam and you were both part of Mark Speckman’s group, in Montreal. What memories do you have of Jerome?

He’s a funny guy. He’s something else. He has lots of stories to tell. None of which I can really tell you about, but he’s an interesting guy. He’s really down to earth. He loves the grind, loves the game. With him being here, it was a different kind of field. He was always up for a challenge and it’s good to see him in Calgary doing his thing.

We’ve all seen him play, Jerome is very tenacious on the field. Is he as much of a beast in real life?

He’s goofier in person. But as soon as he steps in between those lines, it’s GO time for him. Off the field, he’s mostly chill and goofy.

Out of the two of you, who was the messiest in the locker room?

Definitely Messam. You see how he is? He’s a bigger guy so his clothes are bigger. Yea, he’s much nastier than me. (Interesting fact: we learned that Tiquan Underwood wins the title of the messiest guy in the Als locker room. It’s OK though, we still love you TQ).

What is his spirit animal?

A bear. Because I remember going out with him once before the game and he ate a full four-course meal the day before the game. I mean, I don’t know if he hibernates or what, but that’s how I think of him. He’s a giant bear.

P.S.: Tyrell says his spirit animal is the pitbull. Hey Denis, I think we can agree that this one is a keeper, right!?

Would you say that he’s a snorer?

H*** yea. I know for a fact that he is.

What’s on his playlist before the game?

He’s all over the place. I know he listens to a lot of West-Indies music because he’s from the islands. Lots of reggae and ska music.

Who’s outrunning who on Friday?

I’m outrunning him. BOOM.

JEROME ON TYRELL

Back in 2013, Tyrell Sutton and you were both part of Mark Speckman’s group, in Montreal. What memories do you have of Tyrell?

Definitely how intelligent he is as a player and how physical he runs. He’s also a funny guy in meetings. He’s a joker.

We’ve all seen him play, Tyrell is very tenacious on the field. Is he as much of a beast in real life?

He’s actually pretty chill. Very laid back with a good sense of humor. He’s a beast on the field, but in real life he’s a gentle – I wouldn’t say giant because he’s a little guy –, but he’s a gentle soul. (We’re not so sure about gentle, but he sure has a good heart!)

Out of the two of you, who was the messiest in the locker room?

Sutty. I gotta say Sutty. I’m a pretty neat guy so…

What is his spirit animal?

He’s definitely a wolverine.

Would you say that he’s a snorer?

Nah, he doesn’t snore. We were roommates at training camp.

What’s on his playlist before the game?

It’s a very broad spectrum because he listens to alternative music, rap music, rock, so it could be anything. (Note: Jerome does a pretty good rendition of Future… if you’re ever looking for a karaoke partner.)

Who’s outrunning who on Friday?

Me. Fo sho.
