Training camp report – June 11

Sherbrooke – Sunday marked the Montreal Alouettes’ last two-a-day of their 2017 training camp at Bishop’s University’s Coulter Field. The coaches made the most of this final opportunity however, insuring that their men are ready for the second pre-season game on Thursday.

The Alouettes will end training camp at Bishop’s University on Tuesday, and will play in front of their loyal fans at Percival-Molson Memorial Stadium, when the Ottawa REDBLACKS come to town.

The Alouettes faithful will have the chance to see newcomers Darian Durant and Ernest Jackson for the first time in a Montreal uniform, as the duo will take part in their first preseason game in 2017.

Fans will also get their first glimpse of several other veterans who did not dress for the team’s first pre-season game last Thursday, in Toronto. Kyries Hebert, Nik Lewis, John Bowman, Chip Cox and Tyrell Sutton should all be in the lineup this Thursday when the team takes the field at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.

Tickets for the first game of the year on the flank of beautiful Mount Royal are available at www.montrealalouettes.com or at 514-787-2525.

Sherbrooke Alumni
2017 represents the eighth year that the Alouettes have held their training camp at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, QC and there is plenty of hometown talent on display during camp.

There are five Université de Sherbrooke Vert & Or alumni on the Alouettes’ roster, headlined by veterans and fan favourites Samuel Giguère, Nicolas Boulay and Jean-Christophe Beaulieu. Clearly impressed with the talent that has been coming out of the Vert & Or program in recent years, the football operations staff added two more Sherbrooke players to the mix this year. Fullback Oumar Touré (the team’s 8th round pick in the 2017 CFL draft) is having an outstanding camp, while fullback back Issac Lauzon is looking right at home in the team’s pro-style offense.

Bishop’s University shares its campus with Champlain College, Lennoxville; a school that boasts a very successful football program of its own. In addition to Beaulieu and Giguère, Philip Blake and Frédéric Plesius are both graduates of the Champlain Cougars program, as well as Head Coach Jacques Chapdelaine and Draft Coordinator Éric Deslauriers.

Rapid Fire
Defensive-back Tyree Hollins had an excellent day at the office, knocking down numerous passes that were sure to be complete for big gains. He also deflected a pass that Josh Furman eventually intercepted… Jonathon Mincy got the morning practice off to a good start, as he made a one-handed interception… Seydou Junior Haidara got on the end of a perfectly placed Darian Durant pass to score when the squad was practicing its red zone offence… George Johnson, who scored Montreal’s only touchdown last Thursday, was active throughout the day and also made a catch in the end zone… T.J. Graham managed to fight off the blistering hot sun to make a nice catch worth mentioning… Kicker Boris Bede continued to demonstrate his strength and precision throughout the day… Veteran receiver Ernest Jackson continues to make catches which seem effortless to him.
