“When we play the REDBLACKS, we have to be ready for war” – Jovon Johnson

D Day is today for the Alouettes. The 2016 regular season home opener is tonight at McGill’s stadium. For Jovon Johnson, not only is today’s game his first wearing an Alouettes’ uniform in Montreal, but it is also his first game against his former team, the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

Even though the team had a short week to prepare with only two practices, Jovon’s preparation remained the same. “Preparation went very well. We made some adjustments based upon what the REDBLACKS do on the field. We are really looking forward to the game on Thursday,” Johnson said.

With the arrival of the REDBLACKS in the league, a new rivalry was formed with the Alouettes. “They’re two teams that are very close to one another geographically. When we play against them, we have to be ready for war,” said the new Alouette.

When asked if he was looking forward to playing against his former team, Jovon said he was counting the hours before the game. “I am really looking forward to playing against them, especially to show them what I’ve got to offer. They have an excellent team this year. As well, I am looking forward to playing against the REDBLACKS’ offense, because I practiced against them for the past two years. What I was able to do against them in practice I obviously wasn’t able to do in a game. Now, seeing as I am on the opposite side of the ball against Ottawa, I can make some big plays in order to help our team,” said the Alouettes’ defensive back.

The reputation of the crowd at McGill’s stadium for Alouettes games is second to none in the CFL. “Alouettes fans are super-charged! They are fantastic, and they are very noisy. And more often than not I have no idea what they’re saying!” Jovon said laughingly “Seriously, the crowd at the games play an important role, as they can cause the opposing team to commit penalties. I hope the crowd will be very loud on Thursday. I’m really happy to be on the fans’ side for this game!” said the Erie, Pennsylvania native.
