The Alouettes make roster moves

MONTREAL – The Montreal Alouettes officially announced on Monday the release of fullback Kerry Carter, linebackers Ramon Guzman and John Surla, defensive back Greg Laybourn, running back Emmanuel Marc and defensive lineman Kitwana Jones.

Carter spent the past five seasons with the Alouettes, winning the Grey Cup in 2009 and in 2010. During those five seasons, he rushed for 295 yards on 55 carries while making 95 catches for 973 yards.

Also a two-time Grey Cup winner with the Alouettes in 2009 and 2010, Guzman spent the last three seasons in Montreal recording 111 defensive tackles, five sacks and two interceptions.

Surla, Laybourn and Jones all played the 2011 season with Montreal, while Marc spent the last two seasons on the team’s practice roster.

The team also announced the signing of defensive back Kyries Hebert, defensive end Marques Murrell, linebacker Kenny Ingram and defensive back Ed Gainey. All three import players have signed two-year deals with the club.

Hebert (6’3’’, 220 lbs.) played with the Houston Texans in 2002 before joining the Ottawa Renegades for two seasons. He then played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2006 and 2007. The former University of Louisana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajun went back to the NFL in 2008 with the Cincinnati Bengals. Most recently, the Eunice, LA native played with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2010. The 31-year old registered 209 defensive tackles and 101 special teams tackles in the CFL.

Murrell (6’2”, 250 lbs.) was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2007. The 27-year-old later spent three seasons with the New York Jets, suiting up in four of the Jets’ final seven games of the 2007 season. The following two seasons, Murrell played in 22 games, recording 21 tackles before joining the New England Patriots in 2010. Most recently, he played for the Virginia Destroyers of the UFL.

Ingram (6’5”, 238 lbs.) originally signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent following the 2009 NFL Draft and spent two seasons on the team’s practice roster. The product of Florida State played in all four preseason games with the Giants in 2009. Ingram played both safety and linebacker in college. The 26-year-old also had a brief stint in the UFL finishing with 22 tackles, two deflected passes and one forced fumble in his first season with the Hartford Colonials.

Gainey (5’11”, 195 lbs.) registered 41 tackles, five interceptions and 15 deflected passes during his four-year college career at Appalachian State. Gainey showed his versatility becoming the starter at right cornerback for all 14 games in 2009 and lined up on the other side of the field the following season, making 11 starts at left cornerback. The Winston-Salem, NC native also made one start at free safety in the season finale in 2010.
