Walls, Seagraves & Pickett

March 08, 2010

Montreal, Mar. 8, 2010 – Montreal Alouettes’ Vice President and General Manager Jim Popp announced today that import defensive end Gavin Walls and import tackle Skip Seagraves have signed for one year and an option after both were recently released by the club. Import quarterback Cody Pickett has also signed for two years plus an option.

A five-year CFL veteran, Walls (6’02’’, 235 lbs) was acquired from the Blue Bombers on Feb. 26. A three-time divisional All-Star, he was also a 2005 CFL All-Star and was named the league<s Most Outstanding Rookie that year.

“We are excited about adding Gavin to our mix of pass rushers – we feel he can give us a rotation of relentless pressure. We did these negotiations right,” Popp said. ”We took our time and came to an agreement that benefits both parties.”

Seagraves (6’05’’, 290 lbs) has started 18 games at tackle since joining the Alouettes’ in 2006, after five seasons with the North Carolina Tar Heels. He has also been involved in the Alouettes’ community programs for the last two years.

“Skip brings exactly what we look for in a player both on and off the field. He is the ultimate team player and a first class human being,” said Popp.

Pickett (6’04’’, 228 lbs) joins the Alouettes after three seasons with the Argonauts. He shared the Argos’ starting quarterback duties with Kerry Joseph in 2009, starting seven of 18 games and recording 1,553 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions on 145 completions. Drafted in 2004 by the San Francisco 49ers, he has also played with the Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders and the NFLE Rhein Fire.

“We are excited to add Cody to our mix of quarterbacks,” Popp said. “He brings playing experience, knowledge of the CFL game, and we think the ability to thrive in our system.”

People just stop this...#5 is the current back up to #13...#12 and newly signed Pickett will be pushing for the spot behind #13...#5 has 2 more years on his contract...he has said he wanted to be traded but said if it didn't happen...he would still be a team play and cause no trouble...recently the als announced that #5 was indeed in the future plans of the team...so now just leave it alone until training camp starts...PLEASE!!!

Regarding McPherson, he is the Alouettes' future, if he wants to be that future. Rumors said he wanted to become starter and asked to be traded, but nobody heared anything on that since a long time. He's still under contract with the Alouettes. Pickett played in Toronto without an O line in front of him. Not exactly the best conditions to show your qualities. I believe he would be seen differently if he has reps with the Alouettes. But I think McPherson remains the best choice. Now the problem is that the Alouettes have the best CFL QB, a very talented first backup (McPherson) that wants to play, a potential starter with CFL starting experience (Pickett) and a youg very intersting prospect (Leak). This will eventually bring an issue on the QB position. The addition of Walls is good news, if Walls stays healthy. I hope he'll follow the Stewart method to stay top shape all season. If he does that, he'll be another threat on the D line behind Bowman or Stewart. I like to see Seagraves back. He did a good job replacing Josh Bourke last season and teamed very well with this surprising rookie Luc Brodeur-Jourdain. Way to go! The Alouettes will still be the Beast in the East in 2010!

A change of heart for Walls? Somewhat bizzare after releasing him then resigning so quickly? In Popp we trust. Go Als Go!!!

Not sure about Pickett. At best he ran hot and cold (mostly cold!) with the Argos last year. Mind you, the Argos were pretty weak in most offensive categories and the O-line didn't protect him very much. However, for any QB to flourish, he MUST have game experience. I hope that the backups will get some reps this season. I think the loss of McPherson is a big one for the Als. While AC had a great year (as usual), he is only (God forbid!) one injury away from the end of his career. The backups, therefore, need to get some reps.
