Montreal, July 7, 2008 – For a fifth consecutive year, the Alouettes will be actively involved in the Wilson Challenge, a tournament between the province’s top minor football teams. Several Alouettes will take active roles in the activities surrounding the event.
Football Québec’s 12th edition of the Wilson Challenge is a summer tournament which is part of the federation’s “program of excellence” aimed at select teams and leagues from Quebec and Ontario. The province’s future gridiron stars, aged 12 to 16, will all be there this July 12 to 20.
The Alouettes will serve as honourary captains of participating teams in predetermined regions and will be on site at the two stadiums hosting the event, Percival Molson Stadium and the University of Montreal’s CEPSUM.
Kicker Damon Duval (Monstars/QBFL), offensive linemen Luke Fritz (Richelieu) and Chris Van Zeyl (EMS), receivers Éric Deslauriers (North Shore/Outaouais) and Danny Desriveaux (Montreal Metro), defensive players Matthieu Proulx (Estrie/Centre-du-Québec) and Pascal Masson (Québec) as well as former Alouette Sylvain Girard (Beauce-Appalaches) have all accepted invitations to be involved in this year’s edition.
Two MU-15 teams – Beauce-Appalaches and Montreal Metro – will have the unique opportunity to play in front of thousands of spectators as they have been selected to face off before the game and at halftime of the the Alouettes home game against the Calgary Stampeders this Thursday at Percival Molson Stadium. The event is a part of Football Québec’s “Totally crazy summer foot” tour, with three events being held, in association with the Alouettes, before the Grey Cup on Nov. 23 at Olympic Stadium.
Taking a leadership role in the community, the Montreal Alouettes are proud to continue their commitment with a consistent contribution to the development of amateur football in Quebec.
