Montreal
- The Quebec University Football League kicked off its 2007 season with a press conference Thursday morning, announcing a two-year deal that will see RDS televise 13 regular season and playoff games, and will certainly draw much needed attention across the country.

Even though it may seem long overdue, as four of the six teams in the Quebec conference were ranked in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports Top 10 throughout the 2006 season, it was certainly appreciated among the six coaches who attended the press conference.

Concordia Stingers head coach Gerry McGrath even took some time out of his brief one-minute presentation to thank Pierre Durivage, the producer of RDS’ coverage of the QUFL.

League commissioner Tom Allen was also proud to announce this year’s schedule change, which is the first of a three-year balanced program. Over the course of the next three seasons, each team from the division league will play two games at home and two on the road against Quebec teams, and will also square off against each team of the Atlantic University Sport conference.

Although the focus of the press conference was on the new TV deal and the revamped schedule, former Montreal Alouette and rookie Sherbrooke Vert et Or coach André Bolduc was more concerned with getting his team prepared for the upcoming season. “Each phase is important, and we’ve been practicing since January,” he said.

Bolduc and his Vert et Or better be prepared for the first game of the season, as they are set to entertain last year’s national champions, the Laval Rouge et Or.

“It forces us to prepare right now,” Bolduc said. “We have to execute well because we know they’re the best team in Canada. It’s good though, because we’ll get to see if we have what it takes to make the playoffs,” he added.

The QUFL season will kick off this weekend, with all six teams in action over the course of three days, on Sept. 6, 7 and 8.

The 2007 season begins on Thursday night when the fifth-ranked Université de Montréal Carabins visit the McGill Redmen. On Friday, the Concordia Stingers play host to the Bishop’s Gaiters, a game that will be televised on RDS. Finally, the opening week festivities end with a Saturday afternoon contest between the defending Vanier Cup Champion Laval Rouge et Or and the Vert et Or in Sherbrooke, which will also be on RDS.
