Montreal – “Doubters,” said Alouette centre Bryan Chiu after he and the rest of his teammates slowly made their way to the dressing room following a 38-24 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Friday night at Percival Molson Stadium.
Anthony Calvillo threw four TD passes for 372 yards, and helped make history by finding slotback Ben Cahoon in the end zone for a club record 55th career touchdown catch, previously held by Alouettes legend Peter Dalla Riva.
“Ben is a great player, I have a lot of respect for him,” said Dalla Riva shortly after the record-breaking catch. “Knowing him, he’s probably happy to get the load off his shoulders.
“Every dog has his day.”
Cahoon admitted he was emotional following his catch.
“I didn’t think I’d feel anything after I broke it,” said Cahoon. “It was real nice to get the support from the fans and my teammates.”
Cahoon’s catch wasn’t the only highlight-worthy play, receiver Jamel Richardson leapt up early in the first quarter to make a circus-like one-handed catch that put Montreal on top 7-0.
“The second Anthony’s eyes were in my direction, I knew I had to go up and make the play,” Richardson said.
Danny Desriveaux was all smiles as usual.
The Quebec-born receiver racked up 105 yards on eight receptions and scored his first touchdown at home to put the Als up 28-0 late in the first half.
Following a one-yard Charles Roberts touchdown run that put Winnipeg on the board, Damon Duval kicked a 41-yard field goal to put the Alouettes up 31-7 at the half.
The second half saw the Bombers chip into the home team’s lead, closing the margin to as few as seven points.
Calvillo capped off another stellar performance, however, with a 29-yard run that nearly resulted in a TD for the quarterback.
One play later, Avon Cobourne scored to restore the Alouettes’ lead to 14.
Head coach Marc Trestman was again content with his team’s performance.
“We played a good Winnipeg football team; I have to give credit to coach (Doug) Berry and his staff,” said Trestman. “We’re playing well, but we have to keep on working.”Ù
