MontrealIt would seem that Avon Cobourne just can’t be stopped.

Cobourne, the running back who is currently on pace to become the first player in CFL history to record 1,000 yards in both the rushing and receiving categories, was too much for the Toronto defence Friday night as the Alouettes left the Rogers Centre with a 32-14 win.

Standing at a diminutive five-foot-eight, Cobourne added to the possibility of becoming the first player to achieve that feat by totalling 210 yards – 107 on the ground and 103 through the air – against the Argos. He also caught an 18-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

But Cobourne wasn’t the whole show.

Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo continued his strong 2008 campaign, completing 27 of his 41 attempts for 379 yards and three majors.

With the win, and his performance, Calvillo ridded himself of all past problems when facing the Argonauts. Last season saw the 36-year old pivot throw nine interceptions against just five touchdowns in four games against Toronto.

Kicker Damon Duval was also on top of his game.

After matching his career high with six field goals in last week’s win over the Blue Bombers, Duval started right where he left off, giving the Alouettes a 3-0 lead with a 20-yard chip shot on the team’s second offensive drive of the game.

After former NFLer Mike Vanderjagt tied it up at three, Calvillo went to work, finding Cobourne in the end zone to put the Als up 10-3.

Vanderjagt brought the Argos to within four with a 15-yard field goal, and two Duval misses later, Calvillo connected with receiver Brian Bratton for the fourth time this season.

While the Alouette offence was again spectacular, their defence wasn’t about to be outdone.

First-year Alouette Keron Williams brought down Argos quarterbacks Kerry Joseph and Michael Bishop a combined three times and veteran cornerback Davis Sanchez picked off his second pass of the season and made three tackles in the win.

The Argos stayed in the game as Bishop found receiver Andre Talbot late in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late as Calvillo hit his favourite target Ben Cahoon in the end zone to give the Alouettes the win – and a four-point cushion in the East Division.

Cahoon made six catches for 78 yards, and caught a pass for the 99th-consecutive game.

With the win, the Als continued their dominance of the East Division, winning all five of their games against their division rivals.

The Als now head into their bye week at 5-3-0 and will face off against the BC Lions at home on Aug. 29 (RDS, TSN, CKAC SPORTS, CJAD).
