Montreal – Avon Cobourne says he is a believer in god, and after his most impressive performance in an Alouettes uniform last week against Hamilton, he hopes to continue to make head coach Marc Trestman a believer in him.
“Yeah I played a good game, but a big part of my game is finding the holes, and the O-line really made that easy for me,” he said. “I also have to credit God, he gave me this opportunity and I have to take advantage of it.”
Despite his fast start to the season, Cobourne isn’t entirely sold on himself yet.
After graduating from West Virginia University as the school’s all-time leading rusher, Cobourne bounced around the NFL and NFLE before finding a place for himself in Montreal in 2006.
“I don’t think I’ve arrived just yet. Even though I played well, I felt like I let my team down every time I was on the sidelines,” he said. “I feel like if I was in better condition, I could have played even better.
“I never play the same game; I’m working even harder this week in practice, I’m finishing all my runs as if I’m in a real game,” he added.
Cobourne believes that his success is partly due to his religious beliefs.
“I’m a strong believer, (God) plays a big part of my life,” he said. “God humbles me when I get too high, and he relaxes me when I get to low and I need that in my life; he keeps me grounded.”
Last season saw the 5-foot-8, 190 pound running back struggle with a knee injury that caused him to miss four games. He believes that was the doing of God.
“That was god humbling me, I was too high on myself, I thought I had arrived,” he said. “I guess I didn’t and now I’m just working hard so that when I do arrive, I stay.”
With an injury to apparent starter Jarrett Payton, Cobourne hopes to continue to take advantage of his time, and hopefully force Trestman to continue giving him playing time.
“I just feel blessed to have this opportunity, I’m gonna keep taking my reps in practise and continue working hard.”
