August 05, 2009

Montreal, Aug. 5, 2009 - Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo and return specialist Larry Taylor have been named, respectively, the CFL’s Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Month for July.

Calvillo – Offensive Player of the Month
Calvillo led the Alouettes to four wins in five games in July and leads the CFL with 130 completions, 1,519 passing yards and a 75.6 completion percentage. He is tied for first with seven passing touchdowns and has the fewest interceptions against amongst starters with just two. He also totalled 50 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

He reached two milestones last month: On July 23, he recorded his 334th career passing touchdown, surpassing Ron Lancaster for second-most in CFL history. A week later, in Edmonton, he became just the second quarterback in league history to record 60,000 career passing yards.

He was named the Offensive Player of the Week following the Alouettes’ 21-8 win over the Tiger-Cats on July 23.

Taylor – Special Teams Player of the Month
Taylor leads the CFL with 730 combined yards and 348 yards on 25 punt returns. He has also recorded 306 yards on 17 kickoff returns in five games.

He was named Special Teams Player of the Week after scoring a 68-yard punt-return touchdown in the Alouettes’ win against Edmonton on July 9. He registered 180 combined yards against the Eskimos during that game.

Taylor was the Alouettes’ Most Outstanding Rookie and Most Outstanding Special Teams Player last season.

The Alouettes host the Toronto Argonauts this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium (RDS HD, TSN HD, CKAC SPORTS, CJAD 800).
