MontrealDespite an especially warm evening last Friday for the Alouettes’ 38-24 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Percival Molson Stadium, time froze for slotback Ben Cahoon at 2:51 of the first quarter.

After quarterback Anthony Calvillo marched his unit downfield, Cahoon, who wasn’t expected to see much action as he recovers from a quad injury, fell to the turf to receive a four-yard pass to put the Als up 14-0.

He also put himself in the club’s record books.

With that catch, his first of the season and 755th of his illustrious 11-year career, Cahoon made history by passing the legendary Peter Dalla Riva for the most receiving touchdowns in Alouettes’ history.

“He’s a great player,” said Dalla Riva. “When he tied (the record) last season, I called him to congratulate him; he just needs to keep on playing and enjoy it.”

A three-time East Division All-Star, Dalla Riva had a very impressive 14 seasons with the Alouettes from 1968 to 1981. He still stands third in team history in receptions and receiving yards and has three Grey Cup championship rings.

Cahoon has also enjoyed a large amount of success in his 11 years in the CFL – all with Montreal. The 36-year-old has been selected to the East Division All-Star team eight times, and was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian in 2002 and ‘03. He also won the Grey Cup with the Als in 2002 and was named the game’s top Canadian in 2003.

“It was an emotional moment for me, I didn’t really expect that to happen,” said Cahoon of the record-setting catch. “It was nice to get the support from the fans and my teammates.”

Though it’s been some many long years since Dalla Riva himself broke former Alouette Hal Patterson’s receiving touchdowns record, it’s likely his achievement will never be forgotten.

“Because there wasn’t as extensive coverage by the media back then, I didn’t even know I was going to break it until the day before the game,” Dalla Riva said. “I never really thought about it until then.”

Cahoon and Dalla Riva spoke following the game.

“He came up to me, and congratulated me,” said Cahoon.” I have a lot of respect him, it was a really nice gesture.”
