Sport & self-esteem clinic aims to inspire Montreal girls

MONTREAL – Young female Montrealers will have the chance to improve their athletic skills, while working on their inner beauty and strength, at a sport and selfesteem/self-awareness clinic on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at McGill University’s Currie Gym (475 Pine Ave.)

Entitled “Beauty & Beast’s” tagline is “Why choose? Be both!” targeted to young women aged 7 to 18, the mission of the event is to inform young female athletes that they may be both: an athlete and embrace their femininity. This premier, and “first” for a Montreal event, is the brainchild of professional athletes, Anneth Him-Lazarenko (all star professional basketball player) and Kyries Hebert (Montreal Alouettes Linebacker, #34, and dubbed “The Angry Bird”).

The one-day event will be hosted by Him-Lazarenko: “There are many sport clinics destined for young men, while rarely organized for young women. As a female athlete I know the importance of balancing physical strength while nurturing self-esteem and self-awareness. I wanted to create an annual event that did just that. Empower our young female athletes.”

In that spirit, participants will be coached by professional athletes, female speakers, and entrepreneurs. There will be a choice of four sport clinics (basketball, track, cheer, and dance) in the morning taught by professional athletes. An empowerment seminar focused on self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-worth, will follow in the afternoon, led by author and host Dr. Laurie Betito, and author and breast cancer survivor, Natalie Agustin.

The day will be capped with an All-Star Celebrity Basketball Game featuring NFL, CFL and NBA players, including five Super Bowl Champions; Terrell Owens (NFL future Hall of Famer); Marie Dugas (Quebec track Gold medalist); Devon George (NBA World Champion, former member of the LA Lakers); Britanny Jackson (former WNBA star); Tyrell Sutton (2015 CFL Leading Rusher); and Albert Haynesworth (former NFL Pro-Bowler), to name a few.

Participants from the Cheer and Dance clinics will be performing at the All-Star Celebrity Basketball Game pre-game, half-time, and on the sidelines. The pre-game will start at 5:30 pm. With tip-off at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $20.

Hebert, who is the founder of the Ky Cares Foundation, will be both behind-the-scenes and on the court. “As a father of two young girls, I see firsthand that the opportunities afforded to boys seem to outnumber the ones given to girls. I want to help contribute to the change I believe we need to empower young women to feel beautiful in their own skin and confident while in the sports world. We are creating a movement here,” mentioned Kyries.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Montreal Alouettes Foundation whose mission is “to promote education by working to reduce the dropout rate among adolescents and young adults and to encourage the development of amateur football in Quebec.”
